[Merdeka Special] - Jalur Gemilang

Jalur Gemilang, Malaysian Flag

JALUR GEMILANG
The government of former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has introduced many changes into the economic, political and social systems of Malaysia. On the 40th anniversary of the country's independence, 31 August 1997, provision was made for an official name for the national flag. The version chosen, Jalur Gemilang, combines a Malay word meaning stripes or range of values with the adjective "gemilang" signifying glorious. No change was introduced in the design of the flag.

PRE-COLONIAL ERA - East India Company

The very construction of the Malaysian flag, with its much larger blue canton is virtually a denial of US influence. Whether the red-and-white stripes in the Malaysian flag can be derived from the East India Company is a moot point, but the popularity of red and white in the East Indies (Malaysia and Indonesia, the Indonesian jack) predates any influence on the part of either Britain or the United States. Red and white are part of the traditional colours of the Malagasy people, too, remember — a people whose origins are in Borneo. Hence, the derivation of the Malaysian flag from the US flag can be disputed.

1905-1950
- Federated Malay States (1895-1946)
- Malay Union (1946-1948)
- Malay Federation (1948-1950)

In 1895 a first Malay federation under a British protectorate was founded (including the four sultanates of Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, and Pahang). In 1905 a flag was introduced. Horizontally white-red-yellow-black (each colour stands for one state, in the order listed here); in the center a lying oval in white with a running tiger.

1950-1963 - Federation of Malaya

The flag was chosen by a body established in 1949 to choose a flag for the Federation of Malaya. A competition was held by the Federal Legislative Assembly, in which 373 entries were submitted of which 3 made it to the final stage. The first design was a badge of crossed kris circled with 11 five-pointed stars. The second design was similar to the first, except that the 11 stars were arranged in two circles around the crossed kris. The third design was 11 blue and white stripes with a yellow moon and star at the hoist.

The Malay Mail surveyed public opinion, and on 28 November 1949 published the result, i.e. a majority for the third design, the creation of a government architect from Johor, Mohd Bin Hamzah.

With a few amendments the flag attained the support of the Council of Rulers on 22 February 1950 and on 19 April 1950 the Federal LegCo passed a motion, that in the opinion of this Council the Flag of the Federation of Malaya should be eleven horizontal stripes alternately red and white in colour, the uppermost stripe being red, having a blue quarter with a crescent and eleven-pointed star in yellow superimposed, and the standard size of the flag to be six feet by three feet.

The design was approved by HM King George VI on 19 May 1950, and the flag was first flown at a flag-raising ceremony held by the British High Commisisoner on 26 May 1950 in the compound of the Sultan of Selangor's palace, attended by TH the Rulers of the Malay States and British officials.

SINCE 1963
- Federation of Malaysia (1963 - Late 1990s)
- Malaysia (Late 1990s - Today)

The Malaysian National Flag consists of fourteen red and white stripes of equal width, a union or canton of dark blue, a crescent and a star. The red and white stripes stand for equal status in the federation of the member states and the federal government. The union or canton of dark blue represents the unity of the peoples of Malaysia. The union contains the crescent which is the symbol of Islam, and the star, the 14 points of which symbolise the unity of the 13 states of the federation with the federal government. The yellow of the crescent and the star is the royal colour of the Rulers.

Two years later Singapore left the federation, but the Malaysian flag remained unchanged. Subsequently a new state was made out and the 14th stripe and point now officially stands for The Federal Territories or Wilayah Persekutuan (WP), namely WP Kuala Lumpur, WP Labuan, and WP Putrajaya.

However, The Council of Rulers, when the Federation of Malaya merged with Sarawak, Singapore and Sabah to form Malaysia on 16 September 1963, decided that the flag should be altered to 14 stripes and 14 points. Though Singapore left the Federation on 9 August 1965, the 14th point and stripe was kept, and now represents the relationship between the states and the federation.

[Special] - Petronas Turns 30

Petronas Twin Towers, Petronas HQ
ABOUT PETRONAS
Petronas turns 30 this year and for such a relatively young company it has earned a reputation as a serious and able player in the global oil and gas arena. Established on 17 August 1974, Petronas (Petroliam Nasional Berhad), Malaysia's national oil company had grown to become a multinational corporation with an increasingly significant global presence. From being a mere regulator and manager of Malaysia's upstream sector, it has evolved into a fully integrated company that is engaged in a broad spectrum of oil and gas operations worldwide. With business operations in just 35 countries, Petronas today derives about 80% of its revenue from international operations and exports.

Ranked among the Fortune Global 500 largest corporations in the world (no. 186, 2003), Petronas has now reached an important milestone in its journey towards its vision becoming a leading oil and gas multinational of choice as its turns 30 this year.

Alamanda Putrajaya is Putrajaya's first shopping centre. The Alamanda Putrajaya mall located in Precint 1 costing around RM380 mil is expected to be opened in end August 2004. With the signing of Carrefour as the anchor tenant and along with the potential 180 tenants, Alamanda will catalyse commercial activities for Putrajaya and create numerous job opportunities.

[Special] Exclusive Contents - An Interview with Bazuki Muhammad

BAZUKI MUHAMMAD

Bazuki Muhammad, born in 1965, is an architect-turn-photographer. He started his photography career in the United States in the early 80's when he was a student at Louisiana State University. Currently attached to the Reuters news agency based in Kuala Lumpur, his single-minded pursuit to become a photojournalist meant having to study for his architectural and photography degree simultaneously.

A hardworking father and husband fell in love with photography when he was 17 years old, and was a first year architecture student at Louisiana State University in the United States. For him, photography was a practical hobby, one that allowed him to become a professional and make a living from it. Before he joined Reuters, he worked for The Daily Reveille, The Gumbo, The Knoxville Journal, The Maryville Times and covering news-wire agencies such as Associated Press and United Press International.

Born in Selangor, a son to an artist, his passion for his craft coupled with his practical outlook on life, has resulted in his work being published in a variety of newspapers, magazines, news-wire agencies, and publications, including Newsweek, Life, Asiaweek, Time, and AP. To date, two of his works have been awarded the Asia Best Sports Photography for two consecutive years in 2002 and 2003 including second place for magazine category at Journalism Congress of the United States of America in 1992.

QUESTION AND ANSWER
Q: How did you fell in love with photography?
A: I was born in an artistic family. My father is an artist. He dedicates his life to painting. He spends most of his time drawing in his gallery at home. We, brothers and sisters, grew up with drawing papers and colors. We never bought Hari Raya greeting card - we drew and color the card by ourselves. When I was doing my architecture degree at Louisiana State University, I realized that the university offered a good photography classes. We were one the top three universities in the United States that produce good photography. Of course, photography has to be practical, which produces income for me to make a normal living. It has to be a carrer-hobby. So, I studied photojournalism, instead of photography as an art alone.

Q: Can you tell me your photographic equipments?
A: My equipment is my eyes.

Q: What is your style and technique of photography?
A: Seeing creatively! Get the right moment!

Q: What is your motivation and philosophy?
A: When American basketball player Hank Gathers died on court while playing basketball, his coach said, "At least he died doing the thing he loved the
best."

Q: What is your most memorable assignment and why?
A: I will always remember my assignment in Afghanistan. It really makes me feel good to be a Malaysian.

Q: What is your most difficult assignment and why?
A: Again maybe in Afghanistan. It touches my heart to see kids and human living in such poor condition.

Q: What makes good photograph?
A: Listen to your hearts. If your heart says, “good picture”, you’ve done a good job.

Q: What makes good photographer?
A: Determination to use eyes and creativity for good image.

Q: How would you describe yourself? What are your most important principles in life?
A: I’m hardworking. To me, life is a journey, not a destination. The journey has to be enjoyed, while your daily life has to be filled with happiness and lots of smiles. Family is the most important to me. I want to go home to a smiling wife and a joyful daughter.

Q: What struggles did you face in the early days?
A: Upon leaving my architecture practice, the biggest struggles was for me to prove to myself, first, and to my parents, second, that I could make a living out of taking pictures. My wife was not only very supportive, but confident that photography was my calling in life. In the beginning especially, she supported me both emotionally and financially. She helped me prove photograph can be both a hobby AND a career. I needed to prove this point, because photographers here are generally not as well respected as their counterparts in the States.

Q: How did you battle these adversities and motivate yourself to persevere to reach your goals?
A: I don’t think I need to “battle” with myself. I have always looked forward to Mondays, and going to work! Work is pleasure to me!

Q: What were some of the disappointments you faced in the pursuit of your dreams?
A: When I came back from the States and found out photography was “cheap”. A picture was worth 35 sen. I wondered, “if a pictures costs only 35 sen (at a one-hour photo service), why is it then sold at RM1 each?

Q: What are your greatest achievements and have they been what you hoped for? What do you hope to achieve in the near future?
A: The greatest achievement for me is to wake up on Monday mornings and look forward to going to work. I also hope to be recognized, at least in Asia. So far, two of my works have been awarded the Asia Best Sports Photography for two consecutives years in 2002 and 2003. And in 1992, I won second place in magazine category at Journalism Congress of the United States of America. I am also excited about my upcoming exhibition at Universiti Putra Malaysia. The two-week exhibition would not only showcase my best works but allow me to give back to society.

Q: What advice would you like to give to the aspiring photojournalists?
A: Generally, I think every individual should be crazy about what they do every day. It’s a great achievement if you can make a living out of your hobby. I suppose it’s like how David Beckham is crazy about football!

Fairizuan and New Straits Times, 15 and 24 May 2004.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Personally, Mr. Bazuki is the most humble PROFESSIONAL photographer I ever met. Unlike some arrogant local "professional" photographers, he is so cool and down to earth. Dear Mr. Bazuki, thank you very, very much for your cooperation and advice. I really appreciate your time and your moment. Thank you for your e-mails and private mobile number.

To awesome folks at Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia (Malaysia National Library) and hardworking journalists at New Straits Times, thank you very, very much for your extra information! You guys are the best! Last but not least, kepada Angah cipan dan Zana terima kasih banyak-banyak diatas usaha dan pertolongan anda berdua, terutama sekali dalam hal teknikal fotografi dan seni fotografi. ABAH, JALAN TAR, AND BARBER SHOPS
Today, I went to Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman - Jalan TAR (Tuanku Abdul Rahman Street) for customary haircut at my favorite barber shops in whole of Malaysia, the barber shops of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

Don’t ask me why. I just love and always had my haircut there. The old colonial environment in and around Jalan TAR reminds me the good old days of Kuala Lumpur and Malaya (even though I wasn’t around during that time, but still). However, the memory when I was young with my dad long, long time ago (when we went there for our routine haircut) makes this place very special.

To abah (my dad and all fathers) Happy Father’s Day! I am sorry for being "not so good" son, caused (for the past) and causes (for the present and future) lots of problem to you, but for sure I want you to know, even though I am not really close with you, I will always love you. Thank you for everything.

Hutan Lipur Lata Kinjang is located about 18 km from Tapah (about 1 hour and 45 mins drive from Kuala Lumpur city) and not far from Chenderiang in the state of Perak Darul Ridzuan. The main attraction at this waterfall is the impressive series of cascades winding down a 100-metre drop. There are parking bays and eating stalls for picnikers. Visitors may also visit an orchid garden and a bamboo park. IMHO, Lata Kinjang is the most beautiful and cleanest waterfall in Peninsular Malaysia
