Domes and Skies (For Kak Fiz)
MASJID JAMEK KUALA LUMPUR
In 1897 the British built Masjid Jamek or Friday Mosque in Kuala Lumpur. A.B. Hubbock, the city's "Acting Architect" came from India, where he worked in the Public Works Department, to supervise the construction of this mosque. Situated in the center of the city on a promontory at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers on present day Jalan Tun Perak, it sits atop the site of a pre-urban Malay cemetery. The British built Masjid Jamek in the administrative center for their Malay civil servants, establishing the core of what would grow into Kuala Lumpur. Masjid Jamek served as the principle mosque for Friday prayers and the center of Islamic activity in Kuala Lumpur until the completion of Masjid Negara (National Mosque) in 1967.

The plan of the mosque follows a traditional North Indian layout, with the prayer hall opening out into a walled courtyard or "sahn." The mosque is flanked by two minarets and numerous smaller towers. Three onion domes surmounting the prayer hall and the minarets resemble Mogul architecture.

The Masjid Jamek is an example of the "official" British architecture in Malaysia, which involved a combination of Moorish and Mughal elements. Red and white masonry bands, much like those found on the Great Mosque in Cordoba, Spain, comprise the exterior walls of the mosque. Further similarities to Moorish mosques can be found in the colonnaded arches set in grids and detailed with alternative bands of brick, plaster and marble.

HOLIDAY
Yesterday, after the morning football game, Ena and I went to BB Plaza, Sungei Wang Plaza, and (again) Suria KLCC As you can see (well, not really) on my picture (especially on photo no. 1), there are so many young people, 'lepaking' or (loosely translate in English) hanging out in and around the area. From my experience, the turnout was somewhat above the average, even for the weekends. Then, I suddenly realized it was the beginning of the school holiday! Arrggg! I miss school time.

MANHOOD
To all school kids, HAPPY HOLIDAY! Enjoy yourself and enjoy school while you can. On the other hand, (and the moment of truth for some kids) especially to Helmy, Rizal, and Zulkhairil (my 'adik-adik sedara') and to all boys 'yang turut terlibat sama', 'Selamat Berkhatan' kekekekekeke and oh yea, welcome to the club! ielaks je ielaks je.

VANDALISM
Vandalism (capitalized) is hostility to the arts and literature, or willful destruction or defacement of their monuments, said to be in the spirit of the Vandals in their attacks on the Roman Empire. The first time the term was used was probably January 10, 1794 during the French Revolution, by Henri Grégoire, constitutional bishop of Blois, in his report directed to the Republican Convention, where he used word Vandalisme to describe some aspects of the behaviour of the republican army. However, the term Vandal (English) or Vandale (French) with pejorative meaning was in use in English at least since the 17th century.

Throughout history, the destruction of monuments of a previous government or power has been one of the greatest symbols showing the attempt at transition of power. Recent cases of Vandalism in this vein include the toppling and destruction of Soviet monuments after the fall of the Soviet Union and the Taliban destruction of Buddhist statuary in Afghanistan. In a country with an unpopular dictator, vandalism of the leader's portraits and other elements of his personality cult can be a common form of dissent.

More generally, vandalism (uncapitalised) is willful wanton and malicious destruction of the property of others or the commons. The term is usually generalized to include non-destructive but unauthorized modification of property, that is, defacement; for example, graffiti. With the rise and development of the World Wide Web came unauthorized and undesired modification of webpages through cracking, another form of vandalism.

Some vandalism qualifies as culture jamming or sniggling - artistic statements in their own right that are illegal and destructive from the point of view of the legal system, but are done with a creative and artistic impulse. Graffiti art qualifies in some cases at least, also billboard liberation and crop circles.

NATIONAL STADIUM
Measuring 76,000 sq metres, the National Stadium, dubbed the most prominent building at the Bukit Jalil National Sports Complex, is a bowl shaped complex boasting three spectator tiers. The venue housed many athletic meets, football matches, opening ceremonies and historical events. Being a multipurpose stadium, it can also accommodate concerts, seminars, exhibitions, Family Day activities, corporate events and also product launches.

You will notice a giant traditional dagger or 'kris' as you make entrance to the stadium ground. Art enthusiasts will find the surrounding panels interesting as they show off traditional art carvings.

The stadium is equipped with the following facilities:-
68m x 105m field
9 laned 400m synthetic track
9m x 400m synthetic track
6m x 60m warming up track

In addition, athletes can easily enter the competition field through a tunnel next to the National Sports Institute upon warming up outside. Every aspect of the edifice is built based on careful planning and quality material. The roof for instance, is made of polyurethane. This gives the stadium a translucent touch besides protecting it from fungus.

At any one time, the stadium can accommodate an amazing 100,000 seated spectators with 200 spaces for the less fortunate. Wheelchair bound audiences have easy access into the stade from designated car parks. There is something special about the seating arrangement. Waves of the national flag, Jalur Gemilang is created through the combination of colourful seating.

Spectators can make their way into the stadium through the main concourse and move about the facility using the pedestrian plaza encircling it. Good news awaits media people as they have access to the news offices, broadcast studios and technical equipment room, thus making electronic reporting more productive. National Stadium's lighting system is also feasible for television coverage. The pre-programmed floodlights with metal halide lights provide brightness up to 1,500 flux.

The north and south ends of the stadium is equipped with two coloured video matrix scoreboards, one for information on events and competitors and the other with a high-tech Cathode Ray Tube for fast action video displays. On a general note, the stadium is equipped with changing rooms, showers, massage point, sauna rooms, security services as well as other related arrangements both for spectators and sports people.

COLORS OF MALAYSIA 2004
Malaysia's unique multicultural heritage burst into splendid colour in the Colours of Malaysia 2004 launch at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here saturday night. The beat of traditional drums fused with contemporary beats charged the atmosphere into a world-class cultural carnival in the 100,000 capacity stadium built in 1998 for the Commonwealth Games.

The sixth edition of the month-long celebration was declared open by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail. The celebration is also in conjunction with the King's birthday. Also in attendance were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, cabinet ministers, diplomats and some 50,000 Malaysians and tourists.

The event, themed Waves and Colours, started with cultural and dance parades of the various races living in the country. A total 6,000 participants comprising cultural groups of various races from each state in Malaysia put up a glittery and colourful show to mark the start of the festivities.

Millions of people also tuned in to catch the launch live on Radio Television Malaysia (RTM 1) and Media Prima's TV3. The event was also covered by 30 foreign media stations and 213 foreign journalists invited by Tourism Malaysia while 851 guests comprising overseas tourism entrepreneurs were also present. The launch ended with a breathtaking fireworks display.

THE THEME SONG - CITRAWARNA
Wajah mesra satu jiwa
Berbudaya seia sekata
Berbagai budaya aneka resamnya
Sopan santun budi kita dalam rumpun kasih bonda

Langkah mara satu cita
Takkan hilang dari dunia
Terdengar suara laungan sentosa
Sudah ternyata jalannya ke puncak jaya

Bertemasya (hei!), bergembira
Dalam rupa ada kata
Bersemarak (hei!), ikut rentak
Iramanya penyatu nusa

Usah digentarkan setiap cabaran
Berpimpinlah tangan dalam satu barisan
Lukisan mesra pada kota impian
Citrawarna wajah Malaysia

Usah digentarkan setiap cabaran
Berpimpinlah tangan dalam satu barisan
Lukisan mesra pada kota impian
Citrawarna wajah Malaysia

Gemilang budaya, gemilang lamanya
Anggun sejahtera dalam satu negara
Berpayung kita pada rimbun pusaka
Citrawarna wajah Malaysia ... Citrawarna

Specially designed to replace the old and boring Fascinating Malaysia campaign, Malaysia Truly Asia is Malaysia's newest global tourism marketing campaign to attract foreign visitors to Malaysia. It is the best and most successful campaign to date. As the result, Malaysia is the third most visited country in Asia after China and Hong Kong, surpassed Thailand as South East Asia top destination and among in the top 20 most visited country in the world. (*Source World Tourism Organization).

This song has been translated into 40 different languages and the English version of Malaysia Truly Asia was performed by the popular evergreen singer Khatijah Ibrahim while the Malay version of this song by Indonesia top singer Kris Diyanti.

Anyway to our American friends or fellow Malaysians in the states, you can catch Khatijah Ibrahim and Tourism Malaysia, Malaysia Truly Asia North America Promotional Campaign (some soft of concert), in Connecticut, USA on 19 June 2004. Later in Washington DC, New York and Los Angeles. Venue and date T.B.A soon.

“Cuti-cuti Malaysia” or “Holiday in Malaysia” is a national campaign launched in 1999 by Ministry of Tourism (formerly known as Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism) and Tourism Malaysia to boost and encourage domestic travel and holiday among Malaysian. Beside that, the campaign was specially designed to help Malaysian economy deeply suffered by Asian economic crisis during that time. This song (and the campaign), sang by Malaysia's sweetheart and no. 1 singer, Siti Nurhaliza, is very popular among many Malaysians.

Together with the successful Malaysia Truly Asia campaign, this brilliant idea came from the best Tourism Minister Malaysia ever had, Dato’ Paduka Abdul Kadir Bin Haji Sheikh Fadzir, now the Information Minister.

MALAYSIAN-CHINESE FOODS
Chinese merchants and traders have long ago been linked to the Malayan Peninsula in the South China Sea. The natural port of Malacca was a strategic trading post and a vital link to other traders from far away. In order to establish trade and diplomatic ties, the ruling Chinese Emperor ordered a royal entourage to escort Chinese Princess Hang Li Po to marry to the Sultan of Malacca. It was then that the Chinese first settled on the Malayan Peninsula in Malacca. These first Chinese settlers integrated with local Malays and formed a unique community called Peranakan.

It was, however, later on in history during the 1800s, that the Chinese came in masses to the Malayan Peninsula. It was during the period of the last European colonists, the British that a large influx of Chinese journeyed to the Malayan Peninsula for employment. Tin had long since been discovered in the jungles of the Malayan Peninsula. It was only now under the British, that large scale tin mining was operational and viable. The booming tin mining industry attracted the much needed workforce of Chinese who came in large numbers, mostly from the Southern provinces of China. Although most of the Chinese who came were employed in the tin mining industry, many were artisans and started small businesses. These Chinese immigrants were guest workers who came with the intention of one day returning to their homeland and families. Many however, had established themselves in various businesses contributing to the initial economic growth of the country. When Malaysia became independent from the British in 1957, although many Chinese returned to their homeland in China, many more chose to stay making up about 25% of today's population of 25* million of Malaysia (*National Statistics Department).

HAINAN CHICKEN RICE
Since most of Malaysia's Chinese are from the South, particularly from Hainan and Hakka, it is quite easy to find food from this region. Throughout Malaysia, one of the most widespread economical meals is Hainan Chicken Rice. The Hainanese also produced Steamboat, an Oriental version of the Swiss Fondue or Japanese Shabu-shabu. Thin slices of raw meat, seafood and vegetables are cooked at the table in a pot of soup broth heated by hot charcoals. Nowadays 'electric Steamboats' are more the norm especially in restaurants.

Originating from Hainan in China, Hainan chicken rice is one of the most popular everyday meals served in food stalls and eateries all over Malaysia. A fresh whole chicken is cooked by poaching in water. It is quickly cooled and cut up into bite-sized pieces. Rice is then made using the flavorful chicken broth. This chicken and rice dish is garnished with cucumbers, scallions and cilantro - sometimes served with a side of soup from the broth. A dipping sauce of chili, garlic, ginger, and lime juice is a must-have to complete this meal!

BB HAILAM CHICKEN RICE
Located in the Bukit Bintang (BB) shopping district, next beside BB Plaza, BB Hailam Chicken Rice is undeniably the gastronomical heaven for chicken rice lovers and hungry souls alike. I am no food critic, but for sure the food there was simply delicious. I think BB Hailam Chicken Rice is a Malay restaurant as I saw some Islamic calligraphy within the business premise. I love KL. It is all about foods, foods and foods everywhere, every time, and every thing.

In celebration of the 30th Anniversary Celebration of Malaysia-China Diplomatic Relationship. Our Prime Minister will travel to China next week, an invitation from his Chinese counterpart, for the official state visits.

Snap Shot - Traffic Light

King of the Street

TRAFFIC LIGHT
Even during the horse and buggy days, traffic in big cities was often heavy. Police officers had to be stationed full time directing traffic at busy intersections. The world’s first traffic light came into being before the automobile was in use, and traffic consisted only of pedestrians, buggies, and wagons. Installed at an intersection in London in 1868, it was a revolving lantern with red and green signals. Red meant "stop" and green meant "caution." The lantern, illuminated by gas, was turned by means of a lever at its base so that the appropriate light faced traffic. On January 2, 1869, this crude traffic light exploded, injuring the policeman who was operating it.

And with the coming of automobiles, the situation got even worse. Police Officer William Potts of Detroit, Michigan, decided to do something about the problem. What he had in mind was figuring out a way to adapt railroad signals for street use. The railroads were already utilizing automatic controls. But railroad traffic traveled along parallel lines. Street traffic traveled at right angles. Potts used red, amber, and green railroad lights and about thirty-seven dollars worth of wire and electrical controls to make the world’s first traffic light. It was installed in 1920 on the corner of Woodward and Michigan Avenues in Detroit. Within a year, Detroit had installed a total of fifteen of the new automatic lights.

At about the same time, Garrett Morgan of the United States realized the need to control the flow of traffic. A gifted inventor and reportedly the first African American to own an automobile in Cleveland, Ohio, he invented the electric automatic traffic light. Though it looked more like the semaphore signals you see at train crossings today, it provided the concept on which modern four-way traffic lights are based.

In memory of Garrett Augustus Morgan (1877-1963), father and inventor of the electric automatic traffic light. The sound effect or noise from the traffic light during the "lintas" or cross sign is for blind people (to cross the road).
